I’ve recently built a brand new “supercomputer” rig, using the new Ivy Bridge platform from Intel, to be used for photo and video editing. My brother gave me a hand putting it all together and being the photography and video geeks that we are, we (naturally) shot a timelapse of us building it:
The timelapse was shot on my Canon EOS 550D DSLR taking a picture every 5 seconds, then images blended in Adobe Premiere.
We had a bit of trouble getting the huge fan to fit on with the large RAM (the Dominator has long red heatsinks on top for extra cooling) but managed to fit it at a 90º angle and it works perfectly! Here are the full specs of the beast: (click on any item to buy on Amazon)
- Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
- 16GB Corsair Dominator GT RAM
- ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional Motherboard
- Intel 520 240GB SSD
- 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB Hard Drives
- Zalman Z11 Plus Case
- Zalman CNPS12X CPU Heatsink/Cooler
- Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W Power Supply Unit
- Pioneer BDR-S07XLT 12x Blu-ray Disc Writer Retail Kit (No Software)
- USB 3.0 Multi Card Reader
You’ll notice there’s no dedicated GPU at the moment – for the moment the onboard Ivy Bridge Intel HD 4000 Graphics are doing the work, and an upgrade will come along when budget allows 🙂
The computer absolutely flies, thanks to the fast SSD and the huge quantity of very fast RAM, coupled with the excellent Ivy Bridge processor. Very happy with it!
