A few weeks ago I showed you a timelapse of my neighbour and me laying the turf for his new lawn, shot using a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. This is Part 2 as we laid the turf for the other area of grass in their now-transformed back garden!
The advantage to using a GoPro camera over my Canon DSLR is that taking thousands of pictures doesn’t wear out the shutter, and it’s also waterproof so you don’t have to worry about it being left in the rain or getting sprayed by garden hosepipes!
For the geeks out there, this is made up of 1,862 photos, and each one was 4000×3000 resolution. Using the GoPro Cineform Studio software, the pictures are not only stitched together but also squashed down to 1080p resolution. I was initially a bit hesitant to allow it to do that, as I presumed it would be cropping the picture too and potentially losing bits I wouldn’t want to lose, but I thought I’d give it a go anyway…
… I was then surprised to see it had squashed the image down to 16:9 so was about to re-export without that, then I realised that due to the image distortion present in the source images because of the extreme wide angle, the squashing down to 16:9 actually undoes some of that distortion and I think you’ll agree the result isn’t bad at all:
The GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition really is a brilliant little camera with so many uses for small, low-budget independent film makers or just for people who want a really fun toy! If you’re thinking of buying one, please consider using the link below to help support this website 🙂
